Suffers third straight defeat
Light HeavyweightUFC
April 27, 2024
Spann lost to Bogdan Guskov via TKO (punches) at 3:16 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 55 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
What a disaster. Entering as upwards of a -200 favorite, Spann dominated Round 1 after securing a takedown and appeared to be inching towards a stoppage on multiple occasions. That all went out the window in Round 2, as did his cardio. That allowed Guskov to get loose on the feet, which combined with Spann's poor conditioning, led to the stoppage about midway through the frame. This is the exact type of fight Spann cannot afford to lose if he wants remain on the very fringes of contention, let alone rostered. Set to turn 33 years of age in late-August, Ryan has dropped three in a row dating back to March 2023.

Spann is scheduled to compete against Bogdan Guskov in a light heavyweight fight at UFC Vegas 91 on April 27, per Nolan King of MMAJunkie.com.
ANALYSIS
Spann will defend his top-15 light heavyweight ranking against a fellow LHW outside the ranks. Spann got to this position after a rough 2023 that saw him submit to Nikita Krylov and lose a razor-thin split decision against former championship challenger Anthony Smith.
Drops razor-thin split decision
Light HeavyweightUFC
August 26, 2023
Spann lost to Anthony Smith via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Singapore.
ANALYSIS
This fight was about as close as it gets, and there's absolutely a case to be made that Spann deserved the decision. Ryan started slowly, allowing Smith to pick up the opening frame, but he rebounded in a major way in Round 2, overwhelming his opponent and nearly earning the stoppage. Neither man was able to pull away in Round 3, leading to the split decision. If you go by damage inflicted, Spann should have got his hand raised. Now the loser of two in a row, Ryan will need to do whatever is necessary to emerge victorious his next time out.

Inconsistent ways continue
Light HeavyweightUFC
March 11, 2023
Spann lost to Nikita Krylov via submission (triangle choke) at 3:38 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
These two were supposed to headline the event two weeks ago before a minor Krylov illness forced its postponement. In a battle of two big men that do their best work on the mat, it was Spann who blinked first. He attempted to take advantage of a prone Krylov by jumping on top of his floored opponent, but Spann left his neck exposed in the process and found himself immediately stuck in a triangle choke. Referee Herb Dean was stepping in moments later. There's obviously no guarantee Spann would have won anyway, but he's going to be kicking himself for the series of events that led to the defeat. Spann's record drops to .500 (3-3) in his past half-dozen bouts.

Spann's fight against Nikita Krlyov (illness) in Saturday's main event has been canceled, Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com reports.

Krylov has fallen ill in the final moments leading up to the fight, so he will not be able to compete. It's unclear whether the bout will be rescheduled. The matchup between Andre Muniz and Brendan Allen will now take center stage on Saturday night.
