The Armband: Gameweek 1 Captaincy Analysis

This article is part of our The Armband series.

Smell that? It's the scent of you pulling your hair out every week having to decide on a captain for Fantasy Premier League, something you've waited the last three months for.

And now it's come. But are you ready? One can only hope…

First things first: the season hasn't started yet, but we all know who is the top option to captain this week. Maestro Sergio Aguero is home to Sunderland in his first match, and if he doesn't find the back of the net, it'll be an upset.

Aguero's peak remains limited due to injuries throughout the years, but there's no denying his 50 league goals throughout the last two campaigns. And in case you forgot, Sunderland were three points from relegation last year and gave up an astronomical 42 goals in 19 road games. That's more than two per match. Black Cats just don't like to leave their home turf.

Kevin De Bruyne should be in the running as well, as long as he's match fit, something to keep an eye on leading up to the match. If not, David Silva could warrant attention, though his fantasy captaincy days seem far behind him after a mediocre 2015/16.

The next best option will also be a popular one, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his first match in the Premier League. While he's not at Old Trafford, Man United have a favorable test at Bournemouth, who gave up 34 home goals last year, most among non-relegated clubs.

Maybe the most exciting match of the weekend will be between Arsenal and Liverpool. Neither defense is all too trustworthy and that could easily lead to three or four goals. Their most recent meeting finished 3-3 back in January.

But with the match at the Emirates, Alexis Sanchez gets the call with a number of Gunners expected to miss out due to lack of match fitness. After winning Copa America with Chile, the winger was given an extended break and didn't return to the club until last weekend. That should be no reason to deter from giving him the armband.

Plenty more will be popular such as Eden Hazard, who's home against West Ham, while Jamie Vardy travels to Hull and Harry Kane visits Goodison Park.

As for the owners looking to go against the grain and hope to spark a fire with an underdog in the first week, there are a few enticing options.

Southampton (vs. Watford) is a logical place to start as the Saints scored 39 goals at home last season, second-most in the league. Of course, Shane Long is the man to back at forward, but some will be hoping Dusan Tadic's form rolls over from last year when he had eight goals and 13 assists, closing the campaign on a tear.

Elsewhere, Andre Gray is the obvious choice on promoted side Burnley. After 23 goals in the Championship, he'll be a hot target of many, especially at home against Swansea, a club that had just 17 points from road matches a year ago.

And finally, for the sneakiest of plays, Alvaro Negredo deserves some attention as Middlesbrough are home to a Stoke team that tends to struggle on the road. Negredo hadn't done much at Valencia over the last couple years, but it was only back in 2012/13 that he scored 25 goals for Sevilla. Plus, his experience from limited time at Man City could help a bit.
