Zavala went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a double and two runs during a win over the Rockies in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Zavala got in on the Mariners' much-needed offensive breakout in a major way, as he paced the team with his three-hit day. The reserve backstop had only 12 plate appearances on the season coming into Sunday, last having played April 13. Cal Raleigh, who belted his team-leading fifth home run in Sunday's second game, has understandably been laying claim to the bulk of playing time behind the dish, although both he and Zavala were in the lineup for the closing installment of the twin bill since Raleigh filled the designated-hitter role.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
To be fresher in 2023?
Zavala's offseason has been beneficial for conditioning him to his upcoming MLB role, shares James Fegan of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Zavala transitioned from first base back to catching once the White Sox called him up last season. However, Fegan shares that Zavala felt like the quick shift was tough to acclimate for physically, potentially limiting his power. The numbers partially verify that, as Zavala slugged .439 across June and July but only .313 from August 1 onward. He's set to split time with Yasmani Grandal, but Zavala is likely an under-appreciated fantasy contributor, especially if he maintains his early season form from 2022.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Zavala lost his spot on the White Sox's Opening Day roster to begin 2022, but he rejoined the big club in June and appeared in a career-high 61 games. He had a .270/.347/.382 slash line with a 31.2 percent strikeout rate, and he saw some run as Chicago's primary backstop while Yasmani Grandal battled injuries. The strikeout rate has been an issue while Zavala came up through the minors, but it's his defensive ability that's his main draw. He should open 2023 in a backup role but shouldn't be expected to replicate his offensive numbers from last season.
