Shaver was added to the Astros' 60-man player pool Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Shaver, who is not on the 40-man roster, is a slugging corner infielder the Astros are trying to convert to catcher. He started a combined 29 games at catcher for High-A Fayetteville and Double-A Corpus Christi in 2019 before making 14 starts there in the Arizona Fall League. The 24-year-old hit a combined 21 home runs and knocked in 72 runs with an .842 OPS in 2019, although a focus on transitioning to catcher could put a dent in his batting production.

Will work behind plate in AFL
Shaver will work as a catcher in the 2019 Arizona Fall League, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 6-foot-1, 240-pounder has profiled mostly as a first baseman or designated hitter, which understandably slows his potential climb to the majors in an Astros organization loaded with that profile. Garrett Stubbs is Houston's only promising catcher in the system, so if he takes to this new role, Shaver, who turns 24 on Wednesday, could find a quicker path to the bigs. He worked 29 combined appearances behind the dish while totaling 21 homers in 188 at-bats between High-A Buies Creek and Double-A Corpus Christi this year.
