2024 Fantasy Outlook
Typically among the slowest pitchers in pace, Gallegos had trouble adjusting to MLB's new pitch clock in 2023. He didn't have too many pitch timer violations (3), but his performance may have been affected by the new rule. Gallegos posted his worst ratios since joining the Cardinals in 2018, while his 25.8% strikeout rate was the 2nd-worst mark of his career. The 32-year-old continued to limit free passes - his 5.2% walk rate was 8th-best among qualified relievers - but he gave up far too many home runs (11) across his 55 innings (1.8 HR/9). On the plus side, Gallegos racked up double-digit saves for the third straight year, along with 20 holds. The veteran's season ended in mid-September due to a shoulder injury, but unless follow-up tests reveal any structural damage, Gallegos should be in line for a normal offseason. Read Past Outlooks
Stuck with first loss
Gallegos (2-1) failed to record an out Sunday versus the White Sox, allowing three runs on three hits to take the loss.
ANALYSIS
Gallegos hadn't pitched since allowing four runs without recording an out versus the Tigers on Tuesday. He was already on shaky ground before this recent stretch of dreadful pitching -- Sunday's outing puts him at a 12.00 ERA and 2.33 WHIP with a 13:7 K:BB over nine innings this season. He's still managed a save and two holds, but Gallegos has been leapfrogged by Andrew Kittredge and JoJo Romero for high-leverage duty in the Cardinals' bullpen.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Rangers eye Cards bullpen arms
Gallegos and Chris Stratton, in addition to Jordan Hicks, could be trade targets for the Rangers, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Previous reports have connected the Rangers to Hicks, with Bob Nightengale of USA Today saying they're aggressively pursuing the hard thrower. However, Grant says Hicks isn't the only Cardinals bullpen arm Texas has shown interest in, with Gallegos and Stratton also being potential options. Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux worked with all three during his time in St. Louis and manager Bruce Bochy had Stratton in his bullpen while with San Francisco.

Gallegos continues to be rock solid in his flexible high leverage relief role for the Cardinals. The 31-year-old inked a 2-year extension with St. Louis late last season after the team scaled back his workload from 80.1 innings in 2021 to just 59 last year. Gallegos nearly replicated his prior season outputs, posting 14 saves, similar ratios and a strikeout rate over 30% for the fourth straight year, though he didn't produce as many whiffs or strikeouts on his 4-seamer. He also walked batters at a career-worst clip (7.7%), but was still league average for that particular metric while measuring in the 90th percentile or higher in expected batting average, K% and whiff percentage. Gallegos should still be in the mix for saves in 2023, but he isn't likely to step into full-time closer duties unless Ryan Helsley suffers an injury.
