2019 Tournament PreviewSt. John's squeaked into the NCAA Tournament despite finishing seventh in the Big East and getting bounced from the conference tournament in the quarterfinals. The Red Storm do not start any player taller than 6-foot-7, but they shoot the three relatively well, push the pace and take care of the ball. Junior guard Shamorie Ponds (19.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 5.2 apg, 2.6 spg) shoots 35.5 percent on 3-pointers and gets to the foul line at a healthy clip, taking 5.5 free throws per game and making 84.1 percent. A 6-5 Auburn transfer, Mustapha Heron (14.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg) shoots 42.1 percent from long range and 6-6 Juco transfer LJ Figueroa (14.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg) hits 37.5 percent. The Red Storm predictably struggle on the glass, ranking 342nd in offensive rebounding rate. They make up for it by pushing the pace (12th-fastest average possession length) and ranking sixth nationally in turnovers per possession (14.1 percent). The Johnnies are capable of stringing together multiple wins, but they'll have to start in the 11-seed play-in game in the West Region.
